Overload

I've been in emotional overload mode lately. Sorry for the lack of posts. I have a few major projects in the works that I am just itching to share with you, and I'm getting re-settled slowly but surely. I need to break out the pens and get drawing.
This is a draft from an early page idea for I Heart the Arctic. Enjoy!

A Dear Friend

These are some business cards I designed for my dear friend Jennifer Boyer–
– she's also the brains behind the blog Lexigal.
Jennifer is one of the most insightful, kind people I know, and the writings she posts daily fully embody those characteristics. Have a look, I'm sure she'd love to share with you.

Moving News

I am moving back to Portland this coming weekend. New York was a fantastic adventure, but I'm so glad to be going home. As such, a few things, like my etsy shop will be temporarily inactive while my things are enroute from east coast to west. So if you would like to place an order, please do it before 9am on March 9th. I will reopen the shop as soon as my boxes arrive.
I'm looking forward to catching up with good friends and settling in.

Charlotte Gainsbourg: IRM

I Heart Charlotte Gainsbourg. Oh so much.
Can we talk about how stellar her new album is? It's amazing. It was co-written and produced by Beck and is such a perfect compliment to her style and voice.
I'm sure you've all seen the youtube music video of "Heaven Can Wait"
the rest of the album was released in the US in late January, and it's been playing on repeat in my studio since then. It's heavenly.

Sketch Rut

Sometimes I hit a drawing rut. I'm working on a handful of larger projects, and I get stuck inside my head with them. To get the ideas flowing again I flipped through a favorite photography book and drew little bits out of the scenes, improvising arrangements and loosening up!

Lines&Shapes Sweden Issue

I ordered Volume 5 of Lines & Shapes the other day (it arrived super speedy). Lines & Shapes is put together by the duo of Lena Corwin and Maria Vettese, I'd been itching to get my hands on a copy of this lovely publication for some time, but have been extra short on $, but, lucky for me, and soon lucky for you, they're having a sale through the 31st of January in the Lines & Shapes shop. I am absolutely thrilled with the Sweden issue, being half Swede myself.

Sock Monkeys..and Zebras

"Sock and Glove" by Myako Kanamori

This is quite possibly one of the coolest books I've checked out of the library in ages. It's full of sock monkeys, sheep, birds, fish, pigs and even a sock zebra! The back has step by step instructions on how to make each of these cuties, and the front is full of photos on their little sock animal adventures. I'm inspired. When I get some down time I think I want to try to make the sock sheep!

ReadyMade Feature

ReadyMade got a re-design...
I Heart the Arctic is featured in the front section (!!!)
And, arctic circles towards the back!

I've been doing my best to keep this under my hat until it came out, but it was really really hard. I'm so excited to be featured in this month's issue of ReadyMade (Feb/Mar issue). It's also the issue launching their new re-design and it's pretty amazing inside from head to toe. Go get yourself an issue! I recognize some other amazing Brooklyn designers and illustrators throughout its pages, including a huge feature on George and Jacqueline Schmidt of Screech Owl Design. I met Jacqueline at the Williamsburg Flea, and she was sweet as can be. Thanks so much to the ReadyMade staff for putting my little Arctic book in there, you were all a joy to be in contact with.

Gallery Hanahou Opening

Last night was an opening at gallery hanahou in soho (sort of). It was packed, and I mean packed. 20/10 was a great exhibition with works from dozens of artist in a variety of mediums. I particularly like the piece Shen Plum put in. The card image above was also done by Shen. If you're in the area, it's definitely worth a visit:

More Tiny Hearts

I've listed some new fabric patterns for the small heart necklaces. I've also strung these a little bit different, through the top instead of through both sides. I like both ways, but it's nice to have some variety. They're up in the etsy shop:
Hello Yellow / Blue Flower / Nature Print / Dusty Blue

I have tons of new work to share soon, I just have to get to photographing it! But, for now, I have a plush heart filled workspace.

Heart Shaped Necklaces

In the return from the holiday, I've been a little slow in starting new illustrations. I've been doing a lot of sewing and making. I transformed a plush heart (made from the arctic patterned fabric) into a necklace to wear. I'm really happy with how it turned out so I made a few extra for the shop, and a few smaller heart necklaces out of a nature patterned fabric. Both are 100% cotton with natural cotton covered string. I've put each in a muslin pouch with sea green stitching.
A few are up in the shop: Arctic (larger) / Nature (smaller)

Purl Soho

I took a fieldtrip last weekend to Purl Soho to browse some good string and fabric patterns. As I found out last year, I have zero patience for knitting, so my yarn / string needs are purely for other uses like packaging, and more recently making some heart necklaces(!). I heard about Purl Soho on the Wiksten-made blog (thank you Jenny!). This place was seriously incredible. So many different materials, and more colors than I could wrap my mind around, plus the staff was super helpful. Then I went down the street about half a block to their sister store Purl Patchwork which was full of wonderfully designed fabrics. I ended up purchasing some natural wrapped cotton string (undyed cotton wound in navy thread) and a few quarters of patterned fabrics, both of which I'm using to sew some tiny hearts to make into necklaces. Such a good Saturday morning adventure.

My flat file boxes are full, and I'm trying to make room for new work! I've posted all 4 of the packs on Etsy. Each of the drawings is packed up with a board backing, and in a plastic protective sleeve (see top photos!) I'm also putting in some extra goodies in the form of post cards, waffles, polaroids, heart ornaments etc. Full lists of what is included in each pack is in the shop description.

The Working Proof Gallery

"Aurora" / 11x15" / Screenprint + Hand Coloring on Grey Paper

I'm so honored to announce that I have a print up with "The Working Proof". They pair artists with a charity of their choice and donate 15% of each print sale directly to the charity. So far they have a roster of amazing artists, and some really beautiful prints. Head on over to their site to see everything they have in store. There's also an interview here
-------------------------------------------------------------

"Aurora is a two-color screenprint in white and copper ink, printed onto 250gms gray 100% cotton, acid-free paper. I watercolored the “aurora borealis section” onto each print by hand (à la a monotype), making each print one of a kind.

I chose to pair my Aurora with Show Hope. I lost a parent to cancer recently, and I can’t even imagine what it would be like to be orphaned as a child. Show Hope helps orphaned children have a family life, and makes sure that the cost of adoption is not a reason that they don’t have homes. My heart goes out to all of these children, and I would love for my print to make a difference for this organization."
